When Red Clover and the Hello Café Close, Where Does Thetford Get Lunch?

October 15, 2026

Thetford's two sit-down lunch counters, both on Route 5 in East Thetford, close for the season two weeks apart this fall. Red Clover Cafe and Creamery has its last day on Saturday, October 17. Cedar Circle Farm's Hello Café serves its last cup on Sunday, November 1. After that, much of the town's prepared food comes from a farmstand open four days a week, a chicken counter in Post Mills, and whatever you cook at home.

None of this is new to anyone who has spent a winter here. What is new in 2026 is the plan to change it. In August, the Thetford Center Community Trust won local approval for a year-round store and café on Route 113. The Trust's own timeline shows how far off that still is.

The countdown, by date

The fall schedule below comes from the businesses' own posted hours. It's worth keeping on the fridge until the snow sticks.

Red Clover's added Fridays end first

Red Clover usually runs Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Starting October 1, its website says it will "be open for Fridays," with October 2, 9 and 16 listed. The site gives the season's last day as "SAT., OCT 17TH !!" That leaves one Friday and two Saturdays from today for a sandwich, homemade soup, or a maple creemee before the last day.

The same page says Red Clover is "looking for two workers for next summer," so the café is already planning for next season.

Cedar Circle switches to a farmstand-only schedule

Down Route 5, Cedar Circle Farm keeps its full schedule through November 1. The farmstand and greenhouse are open 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, and the Hello Café serves 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. The farm describes the café as serving organic coffee and espresso. From November 2, the café and greenhouse are listed as "CLOSED FOR THE SEASON." The farmstand stays open Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The farmstand carries more than produce. The farm lists prepared foods, baked goods, products from other local farms, and specialty groceries. That makes it Thetford's main source of ready-made food in November and December, but only from Thursday to Sunday. The one exception is Thanksgiving week. The stand opens Monday, November 23 and Tuesday, November 24 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Wednesday, November 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., then closes Thursday and Friday.

One summer extra is gone early. Cedar Circle's Monday Meals, the take-out dinners sold by weight at the Hello Café, won't return this fall. The farm says: "Due to kitchen staffing limitations, we will no longer be offering Monday Meals this fall. We hope to be back next season!" Some of the farm's older pages still list Monday Meals running through October 31. The cancellation notice is the current one.

If you're planning a holiday order, the farm's Thanksgiving pre-order page still showed the 2025 deadline and menu when we checked. Watch for a 2026 version before counting on it. Cedar Circle's farmers market booths are in Lebanon and Norwich, not in town.

What stays open after the café season

Post Mills has the most dependable posted hours in town for a hot meal. The Krispy Krunchy Chicken counter at Baker's General Store, 7788 VT-113, lists hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with chicken, tenders, biscuits and sides. The general store's own hours appear only in directory listings, so call ahead if you're counting on an early stop.

We looked for an in-town café that stays open all winter. We didn't find one. That gap explains why the project on Route 113 matters.

The store on Route 113, and why it's two winters away

The Thetford Village Store has stood in the center of Thetford Center on Route 113 since the 1890s. It has been closed since 2022. In late January, the nonprofit Thetford Center Community Trust bought the building for $130,000. The Valley News reported that Margaret Loftus of Crossmolina Farm in Corinth will run it day to day, and that her family already operates the Crossmolina Cookeville Market in Corinth.

The building needs a full rebuild. A Trust member told the Valley News that every system in the 1,800-square-foot store is failing, including the roof, flooring, heating, foundation and siding. Loftus described the goal as "a homey and welcoming place where people want to spend time and feel comfortable when they walk in the door."

The biggest step so far came this summer. According to the Trust's August 2026 newsletter, the Thetford Development Review Board issued a conditional use permit at its August 11 meeting. The approved design has:

  • A store section in front, with retail space for cheese, produce and beer
  • A kitchen and a 24-seat café in back
  • A porch on the south side facing the Frost building
  • A building set farther back from Route 113 than the current store, with parking in front and new landscaping

Two things still have to happen. First, the Trust is waiting on state approvals for septic and water. Second, it needs to finish fundraising. In August the Trust reported close to $700,000 in donations and pledges, raised at about $100,000 a month, and said it was competing for two major grants. Its homepage, which has no date, now says more than $800,000 has been donated and committed toward a $1.6 million goal. Construction is targeted for 2027, and the doors are expected to open in 2028.

So the Village Store & Café won't help this winter or next. The Trust has said what it's building, though: a gathering place and food hub in the center of town. When it opens, Thetford will have a café that doesn't depend on summer traffic along Route 5.

Latham Library's fall calendar

Between now and the store's opening, Latham Library has the most regular public calendar in town this fall. The dates below come from the library's event pages:

  1. Thursday, October 22, noon to 1 p.m. The Fall '26/Winter '27 Gastronomy Book Discussion Group starts.
  2. Saturday, October 31, 6 to 8 p.m. Halloween book giveaway.
  3. Thursday, November 19, noon to 1 p.m. The gastronomy group meets again.
  4. Saturday, November 21, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fall Book Sale.
  5. Thursday, December 10, noon to 1 p.m. The gastronomy group holds a film gathering instead of a book discussion.

Some of these line up well with the farmstand's Thursday-to-Sunday schedule. The book sale falls on a Saturday when the farmstand is open, and the gastronomy group's Thursday meetings come on farmstand days too.

The dam is closed to cars until Memorial Day weekend

The Union Village Dam recreation area also has a seasonal schedule. In its September 10 update, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said the main gate to the dam, picnic shelter and flagpole is closed for the season. Buzzell Bridge Road is closed to vehicles past the parking area off Route 113 in Thetford Center. The 2027 recreation season opens Saturday, May 29, the Saturday before Memorial Day.

On the drive home from the dam on Route 113, you'll pass the shuttered store in Thetford Center that the Trust plans to reopen in 2028.

A general store in the middle of a village does more than sell groceries. It shapes how a place feels in its quietest months, and we'll be following the Village Store & Café as it moves toward construction. If you're thinking about what your own Thetford home is worth while the town changes around it, Lori Shipulski and the LIVE UV LIFE team are happy to talk it through.
